From its October 2010 dedication until now, the Masonic Monument celebrating the
175t h Anniversary of the Canton Viaduct continues to garner accolades. At the unveiling of this
magnificent granite obelisk, State Senator Brian Joyce presented citations from both the
Massachusetts House of Representatives and State Senate. Officially listed in the International
Time Capsule Registry in 2010, the monument features a plaque requesting future generations
open the sealed capsule in 2135 A.D., the 300t h Anniversary of the Viaduct.
Realizing the historical significance of this location and desiring to make this a place of
Masonic pride, Blue Hill Lodge is spearheading an effort to enhance the park. Plans are
underway to add a walkway and lighting, so that the monument will be accessible to all and be
visible both day and night. Wor. John L. Ciccotelli, original designer of the monument, will lead
this effort. Engraved memorial bricks will be sold to underwrite the project costs,
Operative Stone Masons, many of whom were also Speculative Freemasons,
constructed this national architectural treasure in a mere eighteen months. These men
quarried and precisely cut the local granite using only hammers and chisels! Thousands of
masonic symbols mark the stones of the Viaduct. Upon completion the upgraded monument
park alongside this registered national historical landmark will acquaint visitors to Boston and
New England with the role of Freemasonry in history.
Support from each Lodge in the State and from Masons around the Commonwealth in
purchasing bricks will soon enable us to accomplish our goal. To learn more about the
